Keller Williams Celebrates HAAM

HAAM

Music is in the air in Austin! Today is HAAM Day in Austin.

What does this mean?

Across town, many businesses donate five percent of their proceeds to benefit the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians. To engage support, local musicians are playing in businesses all throughout town.

The Keller Williams Realty team is out in full effect for HAAM Day because our founder Gary Keller is a HUGE supporter of the initiative. Thanks to Gary, I had my first HAAM Day experiences.

Last night, it was a packed house at the Austin City Limits Moody Theater. I felt like a rock star when I ran into a Keller Williams family member who told me to ditch my general admission ticket and join our colleagues from SmartZip in a suite to enjoy the British Invasion show. Austin favorites such as Ruthie Foster, Kelly Willis, Bruce Robison, and more rocked the tribute to the music that defined my parents’ generation.

This evening, our Keller Williams Realty International team gathered at one of our staff favorites, Opal Divines, to celebrate HAAM Day with The Beatles tribute band, The Eggmen. It’s amazing how costumes and a British accent will trick you into believing you are really with The Beatles! #FUN #MEGAFUN

For more than a decade, I have called Austin home but each day brings new first time experiences. The perks that come with working for Keller Williams Realty open many doors and now, HAAM Day will become part of my Austin traditions. Founded in Austin, headquartered in Austin, our company truly is dedicated to Austin!

The Austin Calm After the Keller Williams Storm

September 21st, 2014
Austin Saturday

What does one do in Austin the morning after the storm is over? My 6,000+ Keller Williams Realty family members have departed after a week packed with Mega Camp education and fun. After sleeping for about ten hours, I woke up refreshed and ready for a great Saturday in Austin!

We started our morning at a special preview for the newest Taco Deli location opening near our house in Allandale. My sweet friend, Debra, whose husband is part of the ownership team, invited us to enjoy a “test run” of the grand opening, which meant FREE breakfast tacos at our favorite spot. (The original location near the Keller Williams office is a favorite of the KW Wellness team.) After munching on delicious tacos with fresh local vegetables and downing a watermelon aqua fresca, we thanked Debra and wished her luck on tomorrow’s grand opening. We are so lucky that the restaurant has expanded to our neighborhood!

Thanks to Keller Williams’ commitment to encouraging health and wellness, I have a FitBit, which was a company gift. During Mega Camp, I reached a mind-boggling number of steps each day. Wanting to keep up the momentum and reach my goals set in my MAPS Coaching Health and Wellness program, I grabbed my puppy Snickers for a brisk walk around Lady Bird Lake. Just minutes from my home and in the heart of downtown, I never get enough of the remote feeling that the trail offers while providing the best views of our city’s skyline. And yes, I exceeded my step goal for the day. That’s so KW!

Family and friends is what life is all about! This perfect Saturday ended with a relaxing dinner watching college football with our “family,” my brother-in-law and a couple close enough to be family. Cover 3 is a hot spot to watch sports while enjoying real food, not bar food. Their tagline is “Upscale dining with a love for the game” and they nailed it! The menu has something for everyone and the comfortable atmosphere and large televisions make it my #1 game-watching venue. Plus, Cover 3 provides tremendous support to Partnerships for Children, a local non-profit in which I serve on the board. Order the fried pickles! A portion of the price goes back to further the Partnerships for Children mission. Calories don’t count if they are for charity!

The ending of the perfect day was also the end of a perfect week! I appreciate all that Austin offered Keller Williams this week and for the much needed relaxation it provided me today!

Keller Williams and Kendra Scott CARE!

Keller Williams and Kendra Scott

This week was my first time to hit the big stage at Keller Williams Realty’s Mega Camp. What does every girl stress about when speaking to thousands of people? What to wear to wear of course! No thought was needed, my red Kendra Scott Harlow necklace would be the PERFECT accessory to keep my appearance very true to the KW brand!

Last spring, Kendra Scott spoke at the Keller Williams Luxury Retreat, expanding the near obsession with Scott’s designs from the corporate staff to real estate associates nationwide. This week at Keller Williams Mega Camp, the Austin jeweler’s creations are everywhere, even on the big stage worn by Keller Williams President Mary Tennant and me!

The Austin based real estate giant loves to be in business with other Austin based companies with similar culture. Kendra Scott definitely fits this criteria: founded in Austin, based in Austin, and a company with heart that focuses on giving to others.

Tonight is the Party With a Purpose, a Mega Camp tradition. Not surprising, more than 30 Kendra Scott items have been donated by Keller Williams associates for the silent auction. Even more thrilling, Kendra’s team will be on hand with the “mystery packages” they have donated to KW Kids Care. Guests have the opportunity to purchase a box for $50 that contains merchandise or a gift certificate worth $65 or more. The proceeds will support KW Kids Care!

If you’re not one of the lucky ones who wins a Kendra Scott item tonight, you can stop by her amazing flagship store your last stop out of Austin! Buy something red!

The KW Young Professionals Division has Launched!

September 17th, 2014
KW Young Professionals

Middle Right: KW CEO Mark Willis honoring founding member Alex Frank
Bottom Right: My mentors — KW President Mary Tennant and CEO of MAPS Coaching Dianna Kokoszka

It! Has! Launched! Hundreds of Keller Williams Realty associates from around the globe packed the room to celebrate the start of the KW Young Professionals Division. There was music and cheers – an electrifying group. But, most importantly, this was a meeting of like-minded real estate associates who are committed to working toward a bright future for both themselves and Keller Williams. I am the lucky girl who is driving this amazing new program!

What’s the purpose? This division will prepare the future leaders of Keller Williams to carry forth the company’s mission while maintaining and preserving our unique culture.

Once again, Keller Williams is leading the pack! We benchmarked the major real estate companies to determine what they are doing to cultivate their young professionals. We learned that most are counting on the National Association of Realtors or other local groups to do the job. The KW Young Professionals Division is the first program of its kind demonstrating Keller Williams’ commitment to developing our young leaders, providing them with every tool possible to propel their leadership path. Powered by Keller Williams and supported by MAPS Coaching, this division will be epic!

As we built the framework, we talked to our real estate associates around the globe to find out what they want to connect with our executives and to learn from the young associates who are already superstars. They want the chance to build an international network for referrals and business development. They are looking for leadership opportunities and chances to teach and share. They want to be pushed, want to dream and want to work hard, taking life and business to the next level.

We’ve got this!

  • A members-only program and networking event at Family Reunion featuring KW executives and superstar young professionals
  • A members-only networking event at Mega Camp
  • A monthly live webinar featuring a KW executive or MAPS coach
  • A series of monthly video clips spotlighting a KW Young Professional who is excelling at a high level providing the opportunity to learn the secrets to their success
  • A wellness component
  • And coming in early 2015, a members-only social media platform that allows for robust online conversations and networking opportunities

We are starting out with a BOOM! Keller Williams CEO Mark Willis will perform the first live webinar on October 1, teaching why the Recruit-Select process is important when building a real estate team. Superstar young professional Lisa Archer is featured on the October video clips, discussing how she uses social media to brand her business.

True to the Keller Williams way, we are putting our agents first and using the Keller Williams’ models of success! A KW Young Professionals Leadership Council will work to build upon the division’s foundation, utilizing discussions from five committees: Membership Growth, Current Events, Wellness, Technology, and Education and Special Events. Not only will this ensure we are providing what our associates want, it will also provide for leadership training opportunities.

It’s important to note that this is truly an organic effort started by five young Keller Williams associates who had the vision and intuition to create a group – a group that consists of more than 1,000 associates. They worked hard and as it continued to build, Keller Williams recognized that this is a product that will benefit our family for many generations to come! Just another example of why Keller Williams is the real estate company of choice!

From the Mouths of Babes – What is there to do in Austin?

September 15th, 2014
Blair is a first grade, self-described Christian who loves to dance and play soccer and adores her stuffed penguin. Reese is a pre-kindergartner who loves to dance and make messes with Aunt Holly. She recently scored her first soccer goal.

Blair is a first grade, self-described Christian who loves to dance and play soccer and adores her stuffed penguin.
Reese is a pre-kindergartner who loves to dance and make messes with Aunt Holly. She recently scored her first soccer goal.

It’s always a treat to catch up with my little princesses, my goddaughters Blair and Reese. On this particular Sunday, our after church lunch was at a local hamburger hot spot, Hat Creek Burger Company, known for their playgrounds, milkshakes, and, most importantly for the parents – adult beverages.

With Keller Williams Realty Mega Camp just a week away, I asked Blair and Reese if they wanted to share their favorite Austin places with kids who will be visiting Austin from far away cities. When they learned that this had to do with business and they could provide information for 6,000 people, they were “in!”

Here is the scoop about what Austin kids do in their own words. Well, and a few side comments from the parents – which were not appreciated by Blair.

Where is your favorite place to eat?
Blair: Thundercloud  and Hat Creek. I like the playground at Hat Creek, Aunt Holly.” (Aunt Holly noticed that there was a fruit cup on the burger and fry tray Blair was nibbling from.)
Reese: Maudie’s! Cheese enchilada and queso!” (This also happens to be an Aunt Holly hot spot with a Tex-Mex, kid-friendly menu and laidback atmosphere.)

What do you like to do outside?
Blair: “Hiking on the greenbelt or kayaking on Lady Bird Lake.”
Reese: “Train at the park.” (She is referencing the Zilker Park Zephyr, which is the miniature train at the park adjacent to Lady Bird Lake and Barton Springs Pool.)

What is a fun treat? Where do you go that is really special? Blair: Big Top Candy Store! I get cotton candy.”
Reese: “Gummy teeth at Big Top!”

Are there any places where you learn and play at the same time?
Blair: “We have had field trips to Sweet Berry Farm. I like to pet the goats.” (Reese concurred. Goat petting is quite popular.)
Reese: “Science Center – I petted a snake there! It didn’t bite. And, there was a hot tub on the ceiling!” (She is referring to the Austin Nature and Science Center at Zilker Park.
Blair: Thinkery! They have a big Lite Brite! And the Capitol.”

As I mentioned, the parents made a few notable comments through the disapproving “Blair stares.”

  • The Midway Food Park  provides the delicious bites and zany atmosphere of Austin’s food trailer scene with the addition of a playground.
  • The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum’s Spirit of Texas Theater’s Star of Destiny film teaches Texas history as an experience. Don’t miss it! The museum also has an IMAX.
  • With Formula One racing being such a hit, K1 Speed provides a racing experience for your little one.
  • Peter Pan Mini Golf is an Austin landmark and perfect for an evening of family fun.
  • If indulging in a healthy treat, Skinny Limits has a Kiddie Limits section on their menu.

As I left our lunch and reviewed their answers, I have one big question: When are these two princesses taking Aunt Holly to The Thinkery to play with the giant Lite Brite!?!

Be Well in Austin

Keller Williams Wellness

Top left: KWRI’s Alex Garland, Leslie Vander Gheysnt, Libby Detling and me enjoying Wellness Day
Bottom left: Nina Rowan Heller with her family and friends at Red Rally
Right: The Keller Williams Spirit Stick awarded to the MCA Department at Wellness Day

One of the coolest things about being part of the Keller Williams Realty family is the growing emphasis on wellness. We have an international Wellness Day. We just hosted our first community 5K, Red Rally. Our Wellness Ambassador program is led by our corporate wellness manager who will rock your world – and your abs – Alex Garland. MAPS Coaching has a health and wellness program led by Nina Rowan Heller of  Austin’s Rowan Health Concepts. Nina will make you so mentally tough you that will forget that you love queso – most of the time!

When do I fall off the wellness wagon? Primarily when I travel. As thousands of Keller Williams leaders and agents travel to Mega Camp this week, I want to share how to live and eat well in Austin. What better way to do this than to ask the experts, Alex and Nina!

Both agree that exploring the Whole Foods Market flagship store is an essential part of being well in Austin. Plus, we like to support other Austin based companies with values similar to Keller Williams’. This store is more than a grocery store, it is a shopping and dining experience. Nina elaborated, “Whole Foods has the best seafood bar! Their amazing scallops are inexpensive and they prepare the entree with amazing veggies and no starches, if that is what you want.” It just so happens that when Zhann Jochinke, the CEO of Keller Williams Dubai, got to town on Friday, Whole Foods was his first stop. He recommends loading up on their fresh fruit to avoid “disagreements with your pants.”

Nina also recommends Kerbey Lane Cafe‘s 24-hour breakfast with numerous healthy choices including egg white and vegan substitutions and Casa de Luz for their macrobiotic daily offerings of soup and salad entrees. Casa de Luz offers a unique dining experience and you can bring your own bottle of wine. Let me insert my own commentary here, Kerbey Lane will also be a great spot for friends who might not want to be as well as you!

Alex, and most of the corporate team, wholeheartedly endorse Taco Deli. This local hot spot uses locally sourced organic ingredients. The food is delicious and the salsa varieties are fun! You must tweet me @hollypriestner if you can handle the salsa habanero!

Alex and Nina agree, everything you need to be active is just minutes from your hotel. Take a walk around Lady Bird Lake‘s hike and bike trail or explore its new boardwalk. Stand-up paddle, rent a canoe or kayak, and just take in this tranquil area in the heart of downtown Austin. Help Keller Williams paint Austin red by renting a cute red bike at Austin B Cycle. Enjoy a dip in Barton Springs Pool which stays at a constant 68 degrees year round. My favorite thing to do early in the morning is walk the trail at Lady Bird Lake followed by a smoothie from JuiceLand or Skinny Limits. (I need motivation, a prize at the end.)

As Alex and I finished our conversation, her eyes lit up as she mentioned one of her favorite activities at a legendary Austin location – country dancing at the Broken Spoke. Brilliant idea for cardio! You will use muscles you forgot you have. Just stay away from the chicken fried steak!

Drop by the Wellness Booth at Mega Camp to learn more about Keller Williams’ wellness initiatives. Also, join Alex and Nina at Mega Camp for a little bit of fitness before a long day of learning.

The ONE Thing to Do in Austin

September 12th, 2014

Mega Camp is just a week away and Keller Williams Realty will welcome more than 6,000 top-producing real estate agents to our hometown of Austin, Texas. What a great opportunity for me to kick-off my blog — introducing my Keller Williams family to the city I love so much!?! In the spirit of Gary Keller‘s #1 best-selling book, The ONE Thing, I asked the people whose ONE thing is The One Thing what their ONE thing is to do in Austin.

I started by tweeting Jay Papasan, Keller’s co-author, and my “celebrity co-worker.” Jay’s answer is by far my favorite: EAT! The writer suggested three local hot spots, Uchi, Olivia and the Odd Duck. This makes me hungry! Uchi is the best sushi — EVER! The warm atmosphere, creative presentation, delicious food, and extensive wine list ensure a tremendous dining experience. If you are already an Uchi fan, stop by award winning chef Tyson Cole’s second restaurant, Uchiko. This Central Austin location offers the same level of experience with a slightly different twist on the menu. Olivia is a hot spot for dinner or weekend brunch. The restaurant was named one on the “Top 10 Best New Restaurants in America” list and is known for its seasonal dinner series. (Plus fabulous chef/owner James Holmes grew up down the street from my husband.)

Next, I dropped by the Keller & Company team to ask about their Austin ONE thing. This team was action focused. Don Hobbs recommends catching a movie and dinner at Alamo Drafthouse. I secretly envision Don at a Drafthouse quote-along. Maybe I should invite him to “Clueless”?!? Shon Kokoszka didn’t miss a beat with his answer, Top Golf. A visit to Top Golf pairs friendly, or not so friendly, competition through point scoring golf games with food and drinks. Everyone is happy! Charlotte Johnston, the woman who keeps Don and Shon in line, smiled brightly. “That’s easy, I am a history dork and love visiting the Texas Capitol!” If you drop by the Capitol while you are in town, take the short walk to the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum to learn the story of Texas.

Saving the best for last, I popped in on Ian Vaisman, the marketing genius who focuses on getting The One Thing into as many lives as possible. Ian remarked, “I’d say live music! After all, our current motto is ‘Austin is The Live Music Capital of the World’.”  Ian shared this helpful website listing what’s going on event-wise in Austin that can be sorted for music or any other type of entertainment.

What about you? What is your #theONEthing #Austin? Tweet me @hollypriestner to share with @kwri #KWMC attendees.

The Big Why: Why Keller Williams?

September 10th, 2014
Keller Williams Fun

Capturing moments of my first Keller Williams Family Reunion

The music was pumping, the crowd was dancing, the atmosphere was electric! Ten thousand real estate associates from around the world in one room with the same mission – to build careers worth having, businesses worth owning, and lives worth living. This was my introduction to the Keller Williams Realty Family Reunion, one of the annual conferences for North America’s largest real estate company. I reflected on my conversation a few months before with Keller Williams President Mary Tennant about joining the corporate team, a conversation I knew was a professional game changer, but I never imagined how joining Keller Williams would significantly impact every single person in my life.

Why was this crowd so electric? One simple answer, the Keller Williams culture! Being part of Keller Williams is truly like being a part of a family – a family that believes in empowering, propelling, and taking care of one another. The training focused organization challenges our 100,000+ real estate associates to continue to stretch, learn, and develop a mindset that results in business growth beyond one’s wildest imagination. The success is not about the money, it is about what money can do to help others – family, friends, agents, and strangers in need. Our agents come from contribution and are dedicated to growing the next generation to ensure that they continue this important value in our company’s core.

My early career was in public service. I was so committed to serving others that when I earned my MBA at the McCombs School of Business at The University of Texas, I did not pursue corporate recruitment because I could not identify a company that would provide the opportunity to serve others while impacting a major business. Little did I know that in a few short years, I would join a company totally focused on serving others by landing my dream job at Keller Williams Realty International (KWRI), the Austin-based corporate headquarters for the real estate powerhouse, and also begin my own business serving others.

My goal of this blog is to tell the story of why Keller Williams is the real estate company of choice for agents and for homebuyers and sellers. The other goal is to connect. This is my opportunity to connect my friends and family to the phenomenal real estate professionals I am meeting from around the globe. I can connect my Keller Williams family to Austin, the city they frequent for trainings and conferences. I can also connect those new to Austin to their new community, the place that both Keller Williams and I are so proud to call our home!

I have a lot to share about Keller Williams! You will often hear me say that I am the luckiest girl in the real estate industry. In addition to participating in the company’s vast training curriculum, I also have the dream opportunity of shadowing some of our company’s top executives, Mo Anderson whom Gary Keller hired to be his successor as the company CEO and who is now vice chair of the board and Dianna Kokoszka, the CEO of MAPS Coaching. I am energized everyday by gaining invaluable business knowledge, learning how to expand my leadership skills and mindset, and meeting like-minded Keller Williams associates who are eager to grow and serve others. I have immense gratitude for the personal transformation that these experiences have sparked.

I also have a lot to share about Austin! I grew up in Portland, Texas, a small town on the Texas Coast. I found my move to Austin upon graduation from Texas Tech University a bit intimidating. I had zero experience driving in traffic. I knew only a handful of people. Always one to be involved in numerous activities and philanthropic endeavors, I questioned how I could become involved in a city basically starting from scratch. Austin is special! In no time, I found the most embracing community with interesting and generous people, a whacky culture, yummy food options, fun shopping, and endless activities. Fourteen years, hundreds of friends, countless hours of volunteer work, lots of exploration, and too many calories consumed to count – I have a lot to share about Austin!

I love it when my worlds collide and this is my creative way to bring together my passions and friends. This is about you, my friends! This is about how I can help you enjoy a city, find a home, and most importantly, achieve your professional dreams!
